John Zink Low-NOx Technology Recognized at Environmental Federation of Oklahoma's Annual Meeting
The Environmental Federation of Oklahoma (EFO) at its 14th Annual Meeting on September 22, 2005 presented the 6th Frank Condon Award for Environmental Excellence to Georgia-Pacific Corporation – Muskogee Mill. Georgia-Pacific was awarded a large Eagle in Flight statue for its Fuzzy Filter Effluent Recycle Project. The Fuzzy Filter system culminates a number of long-standing water conservation efforts by Georgia-Pacific and will pay for itself in approximately 3.8 years. The Fuzzy Filter itself consists of numerous fuzzy balls, which serve as a filtering mechanism for the plant’s wastewater, thereby rendering the filtered water suitable for further use in the plant. The Fuzzy Filter is unique in that the fuzzy balls have an indefinite life span. The Fuzzy Filter project has reduced the amount of wastewater being discharged in the Arkansas River by 1.3 billion gallons per year and also allows G-P to reduce its fresh water consumption by 800 million gallons per year.
Secondary winners were awarded Eagle Head statuettes and included AEP-Public Service Company of Oklahoma (nominated by McKinney & Stringer) – “Wind Power for PSO Customers;” Bridgestone Firestone North American Tire, LLC – “HAP-Free in Three;” John Zink Company, a division of Koch Chemical Technology – “Ultra Low-NOx Burners;” Public Service Company of Oklahoma – “PSO Northeastern Station 3 & 4 Reduction of Opacity Emissions;” and Weyerhaeuser Corporation – “Alternative Cover for Solid Waste Disposal Facility.” All of the winners are members of EFO, a non-profit organization representing the common interests of its members as they relate to environmental issues.
