Governor Henry, Labor Commissioner Reneau Commend Zink Employees
Tulsa Manufacturer Gains Honors for Historic Workplace Safety Achievements
TULSA, Okla., Dec. 14, 2005 – Governor Brad Henry and Labor Commissioner Brenda Reneau issued commendations to the John Zink Company of
Tulsa Wednesday. Presentation of their commendations was joined to words of praise from local and federal officials who visited the
eastside manufacturing facility for its 2005 Safety Celebration. Documents from the two statewide elected officials were presented to
Stephen Pirnat, president of John Zink Company, LLC.
Tulsa Mayor Bill LaFortune delivered enthusiastic words of praise at the facility, where more than 600 employees have worked more than 2
million hours and 400 consecutive days without an injury resulting in time away from work. James Brown, OSHA Area Director for the U.S.
Department of Labor, hailed the company and its workers for federal certification as a Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) site. Joining
Brown was Landis Powell, OSHA VPP Coordinator. Also attending from the Tulsa Metro Chamber of Commerce were Jay Clemons, president, and
Darryl Gosnell, vice president.
At Wednesday’s observance, Pirnat said, “Never before in John Zink’s history has this goal been achieved. We are proud of our employees
and their dedication to maintaining a safe work environment.” In a prior letter to Reneau, Pirnat emphasized the “vigilance and
dedication” of employees at the Tulsa facility. Vice President Scott Taylor commented the company’s “recordable injury rate is more than
90 percent better than the industry average.” At conclusion of the ceremony, Pirnat announced employees would, on a rotating basis,
receive an additional day off in recognition of the achievement.
Governor Brad Henry’s commendation to the company praised “exemplary efforts to protect the safety and well being of ... employees and
co-workers.” In her commendation, Commissioner Brenda Reneau hailed the safe work hours record and “consistent outstanding performance
in creation of a Safety Culture” at the Zink Company.
Last year, at the governor’s Safety & Health Conference in Enid, Reneau presented the prestigious Safety Culture Award of Excellence to
the John Zink Company. The award, on behalf of the Worker Safety Policy Council which Reneau chairs, recognized Zink’s creation of
methodical and pervasive safety and health programs.
In a statement from her Oklahoma City office on Wednesday, Commissioner Reneau said, “Effective health and safety programs involve both
management and employees – and that’s good business. A culture of safety and excellence – and profitability – reflects the daily work
life of the John Zink Company.” Deputy Labor Commissioner Patrick B. McGuigan read both commendations at Wednesday’s ceremony.
