TULSA, Okla., June 4, 2009 – John Zink Company has earned safety and health awards for its performance in 2008 from the Oklahoma Safety Council, and the Oklahoma Department of Labor and the Worker Safety Policy Council. The awards will be presented at the Oklahoma Safety Council’s 2009 Safety and Health Conference in Edmond, Okla., on June 5.
John Zink earned the Award of Excellence in Safety and Health, medium company category, from the Oklahoma Safety Council, and the 2009 Award of Excellence, large employer category, from the Oklahoma Department of Labor and the Worker Safety Policy Council. The awards recognize employers who have strong safety and health programs in place and have been able to reduce workers’ compensation costs as a result of implementing an effective safety and health program.
“Safety and health are top priorities at John Zink Company,” said Scott Taylor, vice president of operations. “Receiving these awards is made possible because of the dedication of our employees to continuously improve our processes and systems to ensure our facilities are safe.”
John Zink employees worked more than 1.8 million man-hours in 2008; workman’s compensation costs were $1,680. This equates to $0.0009 paid labor hour worked versus the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ estimated industry average of $0.48 per labor hour.
Award nominees were evaluated on safety and health training program history; employer hazardous identification process; employee involvement; innovative approach to safety and health; injury rates; and workers’ compensation premiums.
The Oklahoma Safety Council is a non-governmental, not-for-profit, public service organization which promotes the adoption of safety, health, and environmental practices and procedures that prevent and mitigate human suffering and economic loss.
The Oklahoma Department of Labor provides consultation, regulation, enforcement, and education information for employers, generating opportunities for everyone to work in a fair, equitable, healthy and safe environment.
The Worker Safety Policy Council was created by the Legislature in 1993 to study and formulate reforms for worker safety that could result in lower work-related injuries and in lower workers’ compensation costs for business.
